Very Rev. David M. O'Connell, C.M., president of The Catholic University of America, announced that CUA has been chosen to present the 2007 Opus Prize, an annual $1 million gift awarded to an organization or an individual whose faith-based entrepreneurial leadership helps people in need transform their lives.

The nondenominational prize is given annually to honor "unsung heroes" anywhere in the world who work on the front lines to address social problems, using faith and an entrepreneurial spirit to combat poverty, illiteracy, hunger, disease and injustice. The prize is awarded to recognize and support the recipients' good works and to inspire the next generation of faith-based social entrepreneurs.

The Opus Prize Foundation, which created and funds the award, will work in partnership with CUA to select the recipient and two other finalists who will each receive $100,000 awards to further their service work.

"In this Christmas season we celebrate the great gift to mankind of Jesus Christ. I am delighted that Catholic University is a partner in this noble endeavor to honor those who give the gift of themselves in a profound and lasting way," says Father O'Connell. "Since service is such an important part of our university's mission and of our students' lives, we hope to make the Opus Prize process an especially meaningful experience for our student body."

Spotters selected by CUA will nominate potential awardees. From among the nominees, four finalists will be selected by an independent jury appointed by CUA. The Opus Prize Foundation board will then select the $1 million recipient and two $100,000 awardees. The selection process will include Catholic University students and will culminate in a Nov. 8 awards dinner on the university's campus.

The 2007 event at Catholic University will mark the first time the Opus Prize has been presented on the East Coast. Three previous award ceremonies have been held at other Catholic higher education institutions in California and the Midwest.

The Opus Prize Foundation was created by the Opus Group, a national real estate development company based in Minneapolis.
