Porter’s announces an ongoing 5-part series that presents an outline for digital image management. One of the greatest challenges faced by today’s family photographer is creating a safe and organized archive of digital images.

From the series author, Stu Eddins, “Digital compact cameras have opened the gates for individual photographers to capture thousands more pictures than they ever have before. The number of digital images loaded onto the typical family computer is astounding. And they are bay and large all vulnerable to the next voltage spike or hard drive crash.”

The series breaks the discussion into five parts: Download, Categorize, Edit, Share and Back-up. The first installment of the series answered the question of why family photographers need to have a system. The second installment provided a logical means of managing the actual files on the computer’s hard drive after downloading from the digital camera. The latest entry was devoted to Categories, Tags and Keywords. The fourth posting will cover editing with the fifth and final hitting on the topics of image sharing and preservation (back-up).

From the first installment, “Right off the bat I’d like to challenge your view about digital photography. The digital revolution didn’t change your camera or how you take pictures in any significant way. Taking pictures today is no easier than it was in 1985, you push the button and you get a picture. What the revolution changed forever (and failed to address) is that our junk drawers and shoeboxes became digital too.”

This series is aimed at both the family photographer and at avid photo enthusiasts. Free and for-fee software options are discussed. The series is of course free of charge and may be referenced by anyone through back-linking.
