Since 1990, Remuda Ranch Programs for Eating and Anxiety Disorders has treated more than 10,000 patients suffering from anorexia, bulimia, anxiety and related issues. On Saturday, October 30th Remuda Ranch will offer its support of increasing eating disorders awareness and raising funds by sponsoring the first ever NEDA walk in Williamsburg, Va. The 5K walk or jog begins at the College of William and Mary's Rec Center at 10 a.m. and will go through the campus. Marya Hornbacher, critically acclaimed author and Pulitzer Prize nominee, will speak at the event. Her book, "Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia" has become a classic since its publication in 1998.

"Remuda Ranch has enjoyed a long relationship with NEDA during our 20 year history," said Mark Bower, executive administrator at Remuda Ranch's Virginia center. "The walk is a great opportunity to partner with the local community by providing education about eating disorders and the help that is available."

Those in attendance will hear Marya Hornbacher speak on the need to move beyond the idea that eating disorders are incurable and recovery impossible.

"Recovery is not only possible, it is essential," said Hornbacher. "We are in critical need of a strong, vocal, positive recovery community to show those still suffering that the journey to health is one they too can take. Working together, we can take back our health and effect real change in the world. This is a journey we don't take alone."

Eating disorders are not normally talked about in social circles, so it is only by raising awareness that society will reach a point where they become solvable and preventable.

"The first annual Williamsburg NEDA Walk will be a time for all of us to join together and increase awareness surrounding the severity of eating disorders and raise funds for NEDA and research related to eating disorders in a fun way," said Emily McMillen, organizer of the NEDA Walk in Williamsburg. "We want the walk to be a time of inspiration, excitement and education for all who attend."
