Thomson Scientific, part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC) and leading provider of information solutions to the worldwide research and business communities, today announced that Australia’s Group of Eight have purchased its National Citation Report. The Group of Eight (Go8) represents Australia’s leading research universities.

The Thomson Scientific National Citation Report is an electronic database of a nation’s journal articles in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The Australia dataset contains bibliographic information for papers published by Australian researchers, including annual total citation counts for each paper, along with value-added metrics for benchmarking, ranking, and evaluating research.

National Citation Report provides detailed bibliographic and citation data on each paper. The data can be searched, grouped, summarized, and ranked using data elements, such as author names, institution, discipline, year, citation count, and collaborating institutions or nations. This provides unique additional information to that already available via the ISI Web of Knowledge(SM) solution which all institutions in Australia can access.

Professor Doug McEachern, deputy vice-chancellor of Research and Innovation at The University of Western Australia (UWA) says, “UWA is delighted to participate in the Go8 deal with Thomson Scientific to purchase National Citation Report. Access to the data will help with our ongoing analysis of the university’s performance internationally and nationally.”

“It is very exciting to have reached such an agreement with this group of Australia’s leading research universities,” commented Jeroen Prinsen, director of Australia/New Zealand Sales, Thomson Scientific. “Australia is a major contributor of influential research. We are pleased that they have selected National Citation Report as their primary tool to measure their impact on research and development worldwide.”
