Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa today commended the Senate for taking an important step toward creating jobs. The U.S. Senate voted 70-28 today to pass the "Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act."

Hoffa said he was especially pleased that the bill spurs public works projects. It also gives modest tax breaks for employers that hire people who've been out of a job.

"This is a good first step toward putting Americans to work," Hoffa said. "What's really important is that our elected representatives worked together to tackle the urgent problems plaguing middle-class Americans."

"I'm also gratified by Sen. Reid's comment that this is part of a broader agenda to create jobs," Hoffa said. "We need to create 400,000 jobs every month for the next three years just to return to a normal unemployment rate. We still have a long way to go before every American who wants a job can find one."

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters was founded in 1903 and represents more than 1.4 million hardworking men and women in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
