Following is the daily "Profile America" feature from the U.S. Census Bureau:

THURSDAY, JULY 23: GARLIC FESTIVAL

Profile America -- Thursday, July 23rd. Legend has it that garlic will ward off vampires. More realistically, there's some evidence that garlic can help avoid mosquito bites and even lower cholesterol levels. But the three million people who are expected to flock to the Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, tomorrow through Sunday will be there mostly for fun and food. The 31st annual event in Gilroy -- which proclaims itself "the garlic capital of the world," celebrates the midsummer harvest and features continuous entertainment on three stages, celebrity chef demonstrations, and a garlic cook-off. Each year in California and Oregon, 245,000 tons of garlic are produced, worth some $220 million. Profile America is in its 13th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
