REACH is the Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It entered into force on 1st June 2007. REACH places greater responsibility on industry to manage the risks that chemicals may pose to the health and the environment.
REACH makes industry bear most responsibilities to manage the risks posed by chemicals and provide appropriate safety information to their users. Airedale Springs is a member of The Institute of Spring Technology (IST) in Sheffield and they have been engaged on our behalf to contact all relevant material suppliers and importers to ensure that all necessary materials are pre registered in accordance with REACH requirements. The IST believes that for Airedale Springs there will be no necessity to register any of the products that we manufacture. We are a "downstream users" in REACH terminology, converting "simple articles" into "complex articles". There is no intentional release of any substances from any of these articles during normal usage. A number of chemical substances and preparations are used during manufacture, but as these are all standard chemicals used in standard ways, and Airedale Springs are again "downstream users" there is no need to register with ECHA. Airedale Springs main responsibilities will be to ensure that we pass any safety related information down the supply chain if requested. The only potential exception to the above are where materials are imported in quantities over 1 tonne from countries outside the EU. We have never done this and are unlikely to do so, however if this were to change we would confirm that the importer/manufacturer has registered materials with ECHA.
