On May 23, 2008, after meeting rigorous qualification requirements, Longevity Consulting was granted the prestigious 8(a) certification by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to compete for federal government contracts. Created in 1974, the SBA 8(a) business development program helps small and disadvantaged businesses compete and grow in the nation's economy by providing them access to federal procurements.

With offices in DC and Virginia, Longevity Consulting is a full service information technology firm providing clients with a broad range of business solutions to improve and maximize their IT operations systems, including, management support services, enterprise architecture, and systems integrations. While Longevity works with numerous commercial clients, a large portion of its business is dedicated to working with federal government agencies.

"Longevity Consulting is excited about the opportunity to participate in SBA's 8(a) business development program to provide technology management consulting services and information technology solutions to the federal government," said Bobby Long, president of Longevity Consulting.

"We've had a long track record of doing exceptional work for the federal government and I believe this bolstered our certification application," added Eric Thompson, Chief Operating Officer of Longevity Consulting.

The process of achieving the 8(a) preferred contracting status with the federal government is an extensive one. While businesses must meet socially or economically disadvantaged requirements, only those businesses that have excelled in current and previous projects are eligible for the 8(a) certification.

Certified firms participate in the 8(a) program in two stages over a period of nine years. The developmental stage is four years and provides business development guidance to help firms overcome their disadvantaged status. Over the next five years, the transitional stage is aimed at helping participants overcome remaining elements of their economically disadvantaged status and leave program.

Achieving the highly regarded 8(a) certification validates Longevity as a consulting firm that can provide expert services to the federal government and puts it in the unique position to obtain sole-source 8(a) federal contracts.

The 8(a) certification also paves the way for Longevity to participate in the SBA's Mentor/Protege program, which helps strengthen certified firms' ability to compete successfully for government contracts. Mentors from the private sector provide technical, management, financial, sub and prime contract support through joint venture arrangements with 8(a) firms. Participating in SBA's 8(a) program will further strengthen Longevity's capabilities in providing thought-leadership to federal clients as a prime contractor.
