In a historic move, the Southfield Michigan based internationally viewed "The Word Network" meets with FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin, and Commissioners Michael J. Copps, regarding concerns related to the proposed merger of satellite radio companies Sirius and XM.

The general consensus is, the series of meetings are considered to be not only history making, but essential in addressing the impact the merger will have on the good and welfare of minority programming. The major concern is the possibility of an unleveled playing field as it relates to equal opportunity to broadcast without being displaced or excluded. The merger could possibly close the door on any option an existing broadcaster serving minorities would have if refused carriage by one or the other.

The meeting with the FCC was attended by Lewis Gibbs, President of "The Word Network" -- an international network that is viewed by over fifty-five million viewers in the US and over two hundred countries worldwide. In attendance with Mr. Gibbs was Bishop Paul Morton (New Orleans) and Bishop Charles Haywood Ellis III (Detroit).

The ultimate goal of the meeting was to request that the commission monitor the merger and ensures that the merged Sirius-XM entity make channels available to "The Word Network" and other parties that provide significant programming directed to minority audiences.
