The following was released today by the National Shooting Sports Foundation:
What: News Conference to announce the "Don't Lie for the Other Guy" campaign in Memphis Who: Harry McCabe, ATF, Director of Industry Operations Nathanial Jones, ATF, Resident Agent in Charge (Memphis) Operation Safe Community (Memphis) Local Law Enforcement representatives U.S. Attorney, Western District of Tennessee State and Federal officials Memphis-based Community Groups Lawrence G. Keane, Senior Vice President & General Counsel, NSSF Where: The Peabody Hotel Lansdowne Room 149 Union Avenue Memphis, TN 38103 When: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 1:00 pm (CT) Why: To better educate residents of Memphis on the severe penalties associated with illegal gun purchasing, or straw purchasing. Also, to educate Federal Firearms Licensed retailers on how to better detect potential straw purchasers. Straw purchasers are otherwise law-abiding citizens who undergo and pass the criminal background check required by federal law before the retail purchase of any firearm. However, these people are not the actual buyers; instead, they use their good name to commit the crime of providing a firearm to a person prohibited by law from possessing a gun. The program's key message is: Buy a gun for someone who can't and buy yourself 10 years in jail. Developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Don't Lie for the Other Guy program educates firearms retailers on how to better prevent straw purchases and warns the public about the penalties associated with participating in an illegal purchase. The program is part of the U.S. Department of Justice's Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. See more at http://www.dontlie.org.
