BP Asphalt announced today the launch of its new truck safety program, TruckSafe. The objective of TruckSafe is to reduce injuries and incidents related to the handling and transporting of hot liquid asphalt via truck. To this end, the initiative enables BP Asphalt to share its best practices for the safe loading, unloading and transportation of hot liquid asphalt with the entire asphalt industry.

"At BP, we take safety seriously. It is our top priority. We created TruckSafe because we recognized a need among our customers and the industry for more information on the handling and transporting of hot liquid asphalt by truck. This tool helps meet the need for high safety standards and illustrates current BP best practices on how to haul, load and unload liquid asphalt in a safe manner avoiding accidents or harm to the people involved and the environment," said Scott Williams, HSE Coordinator at BP Asphalt.

The program kit contains a 20-minute informational DVD, quick reference guide, wall chart and a static cling sticker depicting the proper way to enter and exit a truck.

"We have created a comprehensive program that also includes advice on proper personal protective equipment, truck ergonomics and safe driving tips," said Tim Potter, the Manager at BP Asphalt. "We feel that TruckSafe can be used both as a training tool for new hires, and as a refresher for seasoned employees who have been in the business for years."

BP Asphalt plans to distribute TruckSafe to its refineries, terminals, customers and carriers over the course of 2008.
