Sorbent Technologies Corporation (Pinksheets: SORB) today announces that it has signed a memorandum of understanding agreement with a very large foreign activated carbon producer to be their exclusive supplier to North American mercury control markets. Sorbent Technologies upgrades these activated carbon raw materials in a patented process to produce the high-performance mercury adsorbent materials beginning to be consumed at power plants.

U.S. demand for activated carbon is expected to grow significantly over the next few years as the nation's 1100 coal-fired utility boilers begin to comply with state and national mercury emission reduction regulations. Reduction requirements for some Northeastern plants started on January 1st. Reduction requirements for some Illinois plants begin this coming July and for the rest of Illinois plants, in July of 2009. In January of 2010, Pennsylvania is requiring eighty-percent reductions and nationwide compliance with the Clean Air Mercury Rule is scheduled to begin.

According to the McIlvaine Company, a pollution control market research firm, the world market for activated carbon sorbents for stack gas mercury capture will grow tremendously over the next eight years, going from essentially zero today to from anywhere between $300 million to $1 billion.

"Over the next three years, we foresee a possible shortage of activated carbon production capacity to serve this brand new market," said Sid Nelson Jr., Sorbent Technologies' President. "Simply having access to these special materials may become an issue. We believe that the industry cannot wait over two years for new U.S. capacity to be built. Consequently, over the last few years we have been building bromination capacity and working closely with our foreign suppliers to qualify their products for use in the U.S. This has taken time, but we needed to insure that our current and future customers will have access to the high quality mercury sorbents that they will require in time for compliance."
