Prestigious New York Area Stars of Design Award Winners Announced |

Charles S. Cohen, president/CEO of Cohen Brothers Realty Corporation, which owns and manages the Decoration & Design (D&D) Building, the preeminent resource center serving the design professional, announced the winners of the inaugural New York area Stars of Design Awards honoring the design achievements of the region's professionals. The Stars of Design Awards are given to professionals who have significantly impacted and contributed to a particular area of design. The 2007 winners are:
Lifetime Achievement -- Paige Rense: Having joined Architectural Digest in 1970, Paige Rense was shortly thereafter named editor-in-chief. Under her direction, the magazine has become the world's leading design publication with a total audience of nearly five million readers. She is a frequent lecturer and has hosted symposiums at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and the Museum of the City of New York, as well as at other cultural institutions and events. Interior Design -- Peter Marino: Peter Marino, FAIA, is the principal of Peter Marino Architect, PLLC, an internationally acclaimed architecture firm based in New York City. Since founding his own firm in 1978, Mr. Marino's design contributions in the areas of commercial, cultural, residential and retail architecture have helped redefine modern luxury worldwide, emphasizing materiality, texture, scale, light and the constant dialogue between interior and exterior. He is widely known for his residential and retail designs for the most iconic names in the fashion and art worlds: Fendi, Armani, Warhol, Valentino, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Donna Karan and Barneys New York. Recent projects include Fendi flagships in Rome and New York, Chanel buildings in Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Paris and New York, Louis Vuitton flagships in Paris and Hong Kong and a luxury condominium high-rise on New York's Upper East Side. Architecture -- Shelton, Mindel & Associates: Established in 1978, Shelton, Mindel & Associates is an architectural firm providing complete architectural, interiors and product design services for corporate, cultural, academic, retail, recreational, hospitality and residential clients. The American Institute of Architecture, San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, National Academy of Design and Houston Museum of Fine Arts have exhibited the firm's work in both traveling and permanent exhibitions. Product design lines include collections for Knoll, Waterworks, Jack Lenor Larsen, V'Soske and Nessen Lighting. Architectural Digest has recognized SMA as one of the top 100 design firms of the last century. Product Design -- Karim Rashid: Karim Rashid is a leading figure in the fields of product, interior, fashion, furniture, lighting design and art. He is best known for bringing his democratic design sensibility to the masses. Designing for an impressive array of clients from Alessi to Dirt Devil, Umbra to Prada, Miyake to Method, Karim is radically changing the aesthetics of product design and the very nature of the consumer culture. He exhibits art in various galleries and his work is in the permanent collections of 14 museums worldwide including MoMA and SFMoMA. Karim has also published a variety of design books. Art -- Michele Oka Doner: Michele Oka Doner is an internationally acclaimed artist and designer whose prolific career spans four decades. The remarkable breadth of her artistic production encompasses public art, sculpture, furniture, jewelry and functional objects. She is perhaps best known for her numerous public art commissions, including those at New York's Herald Square Subway Station and the Miami International Airport. Whether for large scale architectural projects or intimately scaled objects, Oka Doner's work is fueled by a lifelong study and appreciation of the natural world, from which she derives her unique vocabulary. Her art can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York and the Chicago Art Institute among many others. Photography -- Judith Turner: Award-winning photographer Judith Turner began taking photographs in 1972 and has had many solo exhibitions in various cities in the United States, Europe, Israel and Japan. Ms. Turner has had several books of her work published and her photographs are in the permanent collections of institutions including: The Getty Center, Los Angeles; The Whitney Museum, New York and Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. Ms. Turner currently resides in New York City. Graphic Design -- Ivan Chermayeff: Ivan Chermayeff studied at Harvard University, the Chicago Institute of Design and graduated from Yale University. He is a distinguished member of the Industrial Designers Society of America and the Alliance Graphique Internationale. He is co-founder of Chermayeff & Geismer, Inc., responsible for the design of the National Park Service signage system, the logo for the United States Bicentennial celebrations, Chase Manhattan Bank, Xerox Corporation, and Mobile Corporation. He is the author of Observations on American Architecture and Ellis Island. Landscape Design -- M. Paul Friedberg and Partners: Established in 1958, M. Paul Friedberg and Partners has become one of the most celebrated landscape architectural firms specializing in urban design. These impressive winners will receive their award and be honored during the D&D Building's annual design industry Fall Market, at an exclusive invitation-only black tie awards ceremony on the evening of October 10th, at Charlie Palmer's Astra Cafe located on the 14th floor of the D&D Building in New York City. "New York is home to incredible design talent and we wanted to recognize that in a meaningful way," says Cohen. "It is apropos that we honor these eight outstanding individuals during the D&D Building's important fall market." The award winners were selected by a jury comprised of six distinguished design experts and artists including photographer Harry Benson, architect Joseph Giovannini, writer Jamaica Kincaid, Tiffany's design director John Loring, interior designer Juan Pablo Molyneux, and Pratt Institute president Thomas F. Schutte. The Stars of Design Awards were initially established on the west coast and awarded at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, California beginning in 1994.
