The U.S. Small Business Administration is encouraging small businesses affected by the fire in Mitchell County, North Carolina to contact SBA's Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955, (1-800-877-8339 for the hearing impaired) Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for assistance in applying for Economic Injury Disaster Loans. These working capital loans are for paying debts, accounts payable, and other bills that could have been paid had the disaster not occurred. These loans are not intended to replace lost sales or profits.

"Providing assistance is an important part of what we do to assist victims recovering from a disaster. In order to start the process they must submit an SBA Disaster Loan application to us," said Frank Skaggs, Director of SBA Field Operations Center East.

Small businesses located in the counties of Avery, McDowell, Mitchell and Yancey in the State of North Carolina and the counties of Carter and Unicoi in the State of Tennessee are eligible to apply to SBA for these disaster loans.

Eligible small businesses may qualify for loans up to $1.5 million. Interest rates are available at 4 percent with loan terms up to 30 years. SBA determines eligibility for the program based on the size and type of business and its financial resources. Loan amounts and terms are set by SBA and are based upon each applicant's financial condition.

Applications and program information are available by calling the SBA's Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955 (1-800-877-8339 for the hearing impaired) Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (EDT).
