In celebration of its 150th anniversary, Northwestern Mutual has donated $1.5 million to four national charities on behalf of its nationwide Network of financial representatives. The donation from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation was allocated between Goodwill, YMCA, Second Harvest, and Junior Achievement based upon the votes of more than 7,000 Network representatives.

"This exciting charitable component of the company's 150th anniversary continues the longstanding Northwestern Mutual tradition of giving back," said Gil Llanas, Director -- Community Relations. "We're delighted to share our gifts with the community -- both through the financial support of the foundation and through the time and talent that our financial representatives and employees contribute."

America's Second Harvest, a nationwide network of food banks and the organization gaining the most votes, was awarded a $500,150 donation. Junior Achievement, a group dedicated to educating students about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experimental, hands-on programs, received a $400,150 grant as the runner-up. YMCA was awarded a $350,150 gift to continue its broad range of health, well-being and civic engagement programs that help build spirit, mind and body for all. Additionally, Goodwill Industries, an organization providing employment, job training and career services to people with disabilities, welfare recipients and others, received a $250,150 contribution.

The company's Network, comprised of financial representatives, associate representatives, office staff and recruiters from around the country, voted to determine how the total $1.5 million gift was distributed among the nonprofit organizations.

In addition to the national gift, Northwestern Mutual also honored its 150th anniversary with a local charitable program. The Northwestern Mutual Foundation donated $150,000 to nonprofit organizations in Southeastern Wisconsin, where the company is headquartered. Together, the national and local programs contributed $1.65 million across 64 charitable organizations.

Northwestern Mutual has been committed to improving quality of life in the communities it serves by concentrating its charitable contributions in the areas of Health and Human Services, Education, and Arts and Culture. Last year the Northwestern Mutual Foundation contributed more than $15 million to community betterment, both locally and nationally.
