The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) broke ground today for a new childcare center at Robert C. Weaver HUD Headquarters Building at 451 7th Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. The state-of-the-art center will provide a safe and convenient environment for the children of HUD employees and surrounding federal agencies.

Located under the existing arcade at the SW corner of the HUD building, the new Child Development Center will have a capacity for about 76 children, 16 more than are currently enrolled in the existing facility. Enrollment of children in the new, updated facility will range from infants to preschoolers. Program spaces include an inviting entrance lobby, 6 classrooms designed to meet the specific needs of each age group, direct and staff offices, warming kitchen, outdoor infant play area and other support spaces. Glazed perimeter walls allow for large amounts of natural light into the classrooms. The new center will consist of approximately 8,800 Square Feet, and is 37% larger than the old one.

According to Ann Everett, Acting Regional Administrator of GSA's National Capital Region, "The availability of high quality child care is of crucial importance to working parents. GSA is pleased to be able to maintain a network of high quality centers that are convenient to federal worksites. The new HUD childcare center will provide a state-of-the-art facility for children of HUD employees and nearby agencies."

While the HUD building is not a designated historic landmark building, the design of the exterior of the new child care center was reviewed and approved by National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts. Care has been taken to design the new exterior elements to maintain the architectural aesthetic of the existing building. Design architects for the new facility are MTFA Architecture, Inc. from Northern Virginia.

The HUD Child Care Center will comply with the current GSA Child Care Design Guide standards and many Life Safety codes. Specifically, the facility will provide direct egress to the outside of the building and natural light.

Cost is projected to be $2,569,863.00. Completion of the project is expected within one year.
