Scholastic, the global children's publishing, education and media company, today announced that it has entered a five-year agreement with Dr. Bill Daggett and will acquire the stock of the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE) and join forces to provide greater support to school districts seeking whole school reform. During this period, ICLE will remain an independent organization operated by Dr. Daggett and a steering committee of highly respected educators. By combining ICLE's 15 years of experience in whole school assessment, strategy and frameworks for reform with Scholastic's expertise in educational technology, school-wide literacy, and curriculum solutions, the alignment of the two organizations will provide more schools and more school districts with the advice, guidance and support they need to significantly improve student achievement and meet state standards.

The Successful Practices Network (SPN), a non-profit organization that provides educators a mechanism to share data, experiences, technical assistance, research and successful practices with one another, is not included in the agreement. Dr. Daggett will maintain his strong affiliation with SPN and support their mission of helping good schools become even better.

"We are excited about working more closely with Scholastic because it allows ICLE to help meet the increasing demand in schools and districts all across the country for strategic counsel and support in changing our schools to better educate today's students," stated Dr. Daggett. "Literacy is a key component of successful school reform in any context, and the expertise of Scholastic in literacy across the curriculum combined with ICLE's unique Rigor/Relevance approach will expand our ability to help schools achieve real, meaningful results that change kids' lives."

"Our organizations share a mission and focus on school improvement and success for all students," said Dick Robinson, Chairman, President and CEO, Scholastic. "Successfully implementing whole school reform requires leadership training, strategic planning and consulting support at all levels, and Bill Daggett and his team at ICLE are remarkably qualified to guide schools and school districts to systemic reform -- whether that means changing the length of the school day, revising the class schedule, providing intensive professional development, implementing technology programs - or in many cases, all of these. With schools increasingly seeking a comprehensive plan and implementation, Scholastic and ICLE together can be even more effective in helping administrators lead, teachers teach and kids learn. Scholastic's strengths in literacy initiatives and reading intervention can enrich the offerings of ICLE where appropriate as directed by ICLE and Bill Daggett."

Members of the ICLE steering committee which is still in formation include: Inez Tenenbaum, former State Superintendent in South Carolina; June Atkinson, State Superintendent in North Carolina; and Basan Nembirkow, Superintendent in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Dr. Bill Daggett is known worldwide for his proven ability to move education systems toward more rigorous and relevant skills and knowledge for all students. He founded the International Center for Leadership in Education in 1991 after serving in various management positions at the New York State Education Department, where he spearheaded a series of restructuring initiatives to focus the state's education system on the skills and knowledge students need in today's technological, information-based society. Dr. Daggett has held both teaching and administrative positions at the secondary, two-year college, four-year liberal arts college and university levels. He has worked on school reform initiatives in several states as well as worked with education ministries and educational institutions in other countries. Dr. Daggett is the author of 12 textbooks, four books on education reform, numerous research reports, and many articles on professional publications.
