Oracle announced the winners of the annual Oracle Academy Global Data Modeling Competition. The 2007 winners included student teams from Romania, China, the United States, India and the United Kingdom. This year's contest challenged students to develop a data model to help in the global fight against infectious disease.

Romanian students from Colegiul National de Informatica "Tudor Vianu" team took first-place. Their data model, "Global Medical Union", was designed to support medical researchers by storing data on disease cases, sharing findings and enabling collaboration to develop cures. The team did extensive research, including interviews with several medical researchers in Bucharest, to complete their project. "Our school is thrilled to receive this honor from the Oracle Academy. My students worked incredibly hard and with enthusiasm to produce their very best work," says Livia Toca, the instructor for the first-place students from Romania. "The students were especially motivated to demonstrate how their database skills can be applied to help solve the global challenge of infectious disease."

The 2007 competition included more than 80 entries. A global team of volunteer experts from industry and education reviewed each entry for business, technical and communications excellence. Top country finalists are listed below:

-- Romania: Colegiul National de
Informatica "Tudor Vianu," led by Livia Toca;

-- China: Shenzhen Institute Of Information Technology, led by instructor Yunfan Lu;

-- U.S.: Bergen County Academies, led by instructor Karen Anderson

-- India: Delhi Public School, Dwarka, led by instructor Sonica Chugh; and

-- U.K.: Albany School, led by instructor Sahyah Tabak

"The Oracle Academy is pleased to recognize the outstanding achievement of these students," said Clare Dolan, Vice President of Oracle Education Initiatives. "These dedicated and innovative scholars stood out among a record number of entries from around the world, displaying the business and technology skills that are required for success in the 21st century marketplace."

The annual Oracle Academy competition is open to Oracle Academy institutions worldwide and challenges student teams to analyze business requirements and develop a data model, a sophisticated process that is typically taught in the university setting and is critical to building database systems.
