The American Jewish Committee will honor Colombian President Alvaro Uribe with its Light unto the Nations Award at its Annual Meeting in Washington, DC next week.

President Uribe will be recognized by the global advocacy organization for his relentless pursuit of peace, security and prosperity for the people of Colombia and the Americas. The award will be presented at the AJC Annual Dinner on May 3 at the National Building Museum.

"President Uribe has been a tireless advocate for a prosperous future for Colombia," said Dina Siegel Vann, director of AJC's Latino and Latin American Institute. "At the same time we are grateful for his efforts to preserve Jewish life in the region at this difficult time."

Uribe was reelected to a second term in 2006 with 70 percent of the vote. Under his tenure, Colombia has advanced its economy and social development while continuing to reduce violence.

"Colombia with President Uribe at the helm has proven, time and time again, to be a stable and reliable friend of the United States," said Siegel Vann. Colombia is the third-largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid.

Previous Light onto the Nations Award honorees include Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and U.S. President Bill Clinton.

AJC has long been involved with the nations of Latin America and formalized its activities with the creation of the Latino and Latin American Institute two years ago. Institute initiatives aim to deepen understanding and build coalitions with Latino communities across the United States; expand relations between the U.S., Latin American countries and Israel; express solidarity with Jewish communities in Latin America; and promote democracy, human rights, stability and prosperity for all of the Americas.
