Pharmaceutical Daily Goes Mobile

Responding to the increased demand for mobile news, the publisher of FirstWord, the world's leading daily digest for the pharmaceutical industry, has launched a mobile edition that is identical to its PC version, providing links to hundreds of stories about companies and products dominating the media.

The new edition, called FirstWord Mobile, is believed to be the only mobile publication that allows subscribers to customize its content, selecting specific drugs, world markets and international companies to follow on a daily basis.

According to Christian Bisaillon, President of FirstWord Publishing, the mobile edition -- which is compatible with most handheld devices -- is poised to tap into some of the eight million business subscribers currently served by BlackBerry.

"Our subscribers tend to be BlackBerry users," he said. "Because of the increasingly global nature of the industry, pharmaceutical and biotech executives are as likely to be working at an airport as they are to be sitting in their own offices. Yet they still need to track the competition. They need to keep up with product approvals and follow breaking news in their own categories." The mobile version, he added, is tailored for the traveling executive, who is basically on the go all the time, but can't take the risk of being uninformed.

FirstWord Mobile provides full synopses of breaking news, culled from a variety of publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, BusinessWeek, Forbes, Bloomberg, CNN, CNBC and other leading sources. In addition, FirstWord monitors more than 2,000 medical journals and hundreds of conferences for news that responds to subscribers' keywords.

Executives who want in-depth coverage can choose between FirstWord PLUS, with an annual subscription fee of $795, and FirstWord Executive PLUS, which is $1,495. Both of these are custom services, allowing the user to access stories and medical literature for up to 25 products and an equal number of companies, countries or regions of their choice, filtering out the mass of pharma news online each day. "Our subscribers come from all over North America and large chunks of Europe and Asia," said Bisaillon, who pointed out that the original FirstWord- started five years ago-has been adding 500 subscribers a week, making it the fastest growing publication in the pharmaceutical industry. Today, there are more than 100,000 subscribers worldwide.
