Motorcoaches are the most energy-efficient way to travel, and Earth Day 2007 (Sunday, April 22) is the perfect time for Americans to make this conservation-conscious transportation choice, American Bus Association President Peter J. Pantuso said today.

"Americans can make a difference on Earth Day by leaving the car at home and taking a motorcoach for a weekend getaway," Pantuso said. "Motorcoaches reduce congestion and pollution by taking more than 425 million cars off the road each year. Coaches provide the same congestion mitigation benefits as transit buses in that we have the capacity to take up to 55 cars, per coach, off the road at one time."

Motorcoaches also play a crucial role in reducing energy use and in helping America reduce its dependence on foreign sources of fuel, Pantuso said.

"Coaches are the most fuel-efficient and least energy-intensive mode of commercial passenger transportation," Pantuso added. "Motorcoach passenger miles per gallon of fuel is highest with 148 passenger miles per gallon, more than four times greater than air carrier and passenger car fuel efficiency - and increasing. For Americans who want to make a statement this Earth Day, take a motorcoach and reduce your carbon footprint."

Modern motorcoaches also offer comfort and convenience, Pantuso added. "Motorcoaches have upholstered seats, personal climate controls, entertainment systems, and restrooms," Pantuso said. "Plus, they have more legroom and headroom than other transportation choices. Best of all, motorcoaches have no middle seats."

The American Bus Association is the trade organization of the intercity bus industry with more than 1,000 motorcoach owner and tour company members in the United States and Canada. Its members operate charter, tour, regular route, airport express, special operations and contract services. Another 2,600 members are travel and tourism organizations and suppliers of bus products and services who work in partnership with the North American motorcoach industry.
