Global Crossing (Nasdaq: GLBC), a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced it is expanding capacity on its Atlantic Crossing 1 (AC-1(R)) undersea fiber-optic cable system to meet rapidly growing demand for broadband services. Omar Altaji, Global Crossing's executive vice president of Worldwide Carrier Services, revealed these plans during his presentation to the 31st annual Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC) conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.

"We continue to make strategic investments in network infrastructure in support of strong growth around the world," said John Legere, Global Crossing's CEO. "We are increasing capacity on our Atlantic Crossing undersea system to accommodate our carrier and service provider customers' requirements for IP connectivity and broadband services, such as social media and content delivery networks."

During the first half of 2009, Global Crossing will be adding 600 Gigabits per second (Gbps) of transport capacity to the AC-1 Northern and Southern routes. Global Crossing's Atlantic Crossing -1 South route connects Brookhaven, New York, to the United Kingdom. Atlantic Crossing -1 North connects Brookhaven, New York, to Germany and the Netherlands.

"Market demand for trans-Atlantic bandwidth remains strong," stated Alan Mauldin, senior analyst at TeleGeography. "According to our estimates, total bandwidth usage on the route increased 38 percent between 2007 and 2008."

Global Crossing has been enhancing its IP Supercore since 2006. The company continues to scale it to meet the demand for bandwidth from all of the regions it serves.

Each of the Juniper T-640 routers in the company's IP Supercore is capable of terabit speeds for future expansion. Early in 2008, the company extended it to three South American cities to accommodate the growing traffic generated by high-bandwidth applications in that region. Juniper T-640 routers were added to the network in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Santiago, Chile; and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Last year, Global Crossing inaugurated a fiber optic cable landing on Costa Rica's Pacific Coast. The new cable connection is an extension of the Pan American Crossing (PAC(R)), which connects the United States' west coast, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela and the Virgin Islands, in addition to the east coast of the United States, South America, Europe and Asia, via Global Crossing's other underwater cable systems.

Global Crossing also expanded the capacity on its Mid-Atlantic Crossing (MAC(R)) undersea fiber-optic cable system to meet rapidly growing demand for Internet Protocol (IP) and Ethernet transport among its customers, and to enhance connectivity between North America, Latin America and Europe.

That upgrade added 340 Gigabits per second (Gbps) of transport capacity on the MAC submarine cable system with the addition of new terminal equipment. The MAC system provides 10 Gbps services with a current design capacity of 920 Gbps. The new capacity will enable 10 Gbps IP ports and also Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) at rates up to 10 Gbps (STM-64).

The system includes approximately 4,600 route miles (7,500 Km) of fiber-optic cable and landing stations in Brookhaven, N.Y., Hollywood, Fla., and St. Croix, U.S.V.I. MAC connects Global Crossing's PAC, South American Crossing (SAC(R)) and AC-1 subsea systems to provide full connectivity between North America, Latin America and Europe.

Global Crossing's SAC system includes approximately 12,000 route miles (20,000 Km) of fiber-optic cable and landing stations in St. Croix, USVI; Fortaleza, Brazil; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Santos, Brazil; Las Toninas, Argentina; Valparaiso, Chile; Lurin, Peru; Fort Amador, Panama; and Puerto Viejo, Venezuela. Fort Amador and Puerto Viejo are shared by Global Crossing's PAC undersea system.
