28th Annual Modern Day Marine Military Exposition

Continuing a tradition of defense industry innovation, the 2008 edition of the world's largest military exposition focusing on enhanced capabilities for expeditionary forces will inaugurate a special ground robotics obstacle course.

The 28th Annual Modern Day Marine Military Exposition will be held at Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA, Tuesday, September 30th through Thursday, October 2nd. The robotics obstacle course will provide ground robotics manufacturers an opportunity to demonstrate their equipment over a course observed by expo attendees and allow comparison of capabilities among the competing unmanned ground vehicles.

Two years ago, the expo brought another new dimension to military expositions with its Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) Pavilion, which showcases leading-edge technology for detecting and destroying or mitigating IEDs. Ground robots, some of which are used against IEDs, are employed in a growing number of other military roles, including chemical and biological agent detection, facility and perimeter surveillance, and reconnaissance, among others.

The Modern Day Marine Expo is co-sponsored at Quantico by the Marine Corps Systems Command and Marine Corps Base, Quantico. A Marine Corps veteran's organization, the Marine Corps League, is overall sponsor of the expo, which showcases products and services of companies that provide U.S. Marines and other expeditionary forces with leading-edge war-fighting systems and equipment. Many of the systems and much of the equipment now used by the Marines and other U.S. and allied forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world in the Global War on Terror were first showcased before military leaders and planners at previous editions of the expo.

The expo provides the men and women who employ the products on display, for both training and combat operations, opportunities to see the latest equipment available. It also provides them with opportunities to convey personal input -- including examples of their own combat experiences -- directly to the people who design and produce the world's best defense equipment, systems and services.

Several other important activities will be held in conjunction with the Modern Day Marine Exposition, including a special by-invitation-only Report to Industry presented by Marine Corps general officers closely associated with all aspects of the Corps' equipment and systems research, development, testing and acquisition programs and policies. The report will be followed by Marine Corps Systems Command Program Group Director Exhibitor Meetings in which members of the defense industry will receive direct input from the men and women who manage the programs through which Marines acquire and field weapons and equipment.

An enlisted awards parade, commencing at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1st, will honor distinguished enlisted Marines and sailors from units around the world. That evening, the exposition's grand banquet and awards dinner, will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in the Pentagon City section of Arlington, VA, to honor two distinguished Americans for outstanding service to the Marine Corps and the nation.

The exposition is open to U.S. and allied armed forces and to Department of Defense civilian employees. Thursday, October 2nd will be "Family Day," when family members of Department of Defense military and civilian personnel may tour the exhibits.

All expo attendees will be required to have photo identification available when entering the base at Quantico, and vehicles may be subjected to inspection. Registration will be on-site; however, Marines in uniform will not be required to register. There is no fee to attend the event.
