Air Transport Association Comments on DOT Airport Rates and Charges Policy

The Air Transport Association of America (ATA), the industry trade organization representing the leading U.S. airlines, today issued the following statement regarding the Department of Transportation's (DOT) changes to the Federal Aviation Administration Policy on Airport Rates and Charges:
"We have not yet had the opportunity to fully assess the new DOT policy on airport financing," said ATA President and CEO Jim May. "Today's announcement, however, brings to mind two key points that the public should be aware of: First, the policy announced by the DOT is nothing more than congestion pricing disguised as an airport fee. Unfortunately, that does nothing to fix the primary cause of delays - our nation's increasingly antiquated air traffic control system. Second, additional fees such as these will only increase the cost of flying for the consumer. We believe that would be most unfortunate and we will be considering our options."
