The Council of Churches of Greater Washington invites all major Presidential candidates of both major parties to a Prayer and Issues Service. Each will be able to speak uninterrupted for seven (7) or more minutes to the religious community of Metropolitan Washington, DC and the Nation in general. The Service, on December 17, 2007, will begin at 7:00 PM with 8:00 to 10:00 PM reserved for candidate deliberation. We also invite media representatives to attend.
National City Christian Church hosts the Service in their beautiful sanctuary in Downtown Washington, DC. Presidents James Garfield and Lyndon Johnson actively participated in the NCCC congregation.
Sixty year old CCGW consists principally of denominations and churches in Washington, DC, and adjacent Virginia and Maryland counties. In serving the people of the nation's capital, the Council works with special concerns, many of which relate to the entire nation.
"We are all familiar with the debate format of the television media," said Dr. E. Gail Anderson Holness, newly elected President of the Council of Churches of Greater Washington. "However, we presume that most Americans would like to hear what the candidates have to say without the constraints of the debate process. We believe that in a format in which the candidates can just get up and talk unfettered and in such a prayerfully, appealing atmosphere, will be of benefit to both the candidates and the public and give us all a better idea about what motivates each candidate.
"Further, we have scheduled the prayer service for December 17 so that voters in those early caucus and primary states may benefit from this opportunity to hear the candidates views," concluded Dr. Anderson Holness.
