More than 400 people from all walks of life enjoyed the Schuylkill River, and all of its natural beauty, by kayak this summer. Since 2006, the Schuylkill River Development Corporation, (SRDC), the non-profit organization responsible for the development of the lower banks of the Schuylkill River, has hosted the tours, which have become one of the Bank's most popular outdoor programs.

On Sunday, October 21, at Noon and 2:00 PM, at the Walnut Street Dock on Schuylkill Banks, the final two kayak tours will take place. Conducted by Hidden River Outfitters, the boats will leave from Walnut Street, make their way to the Fairmount Water Works, then return. The hour and a half tour will have a guide, and instruction will be provided prior to departure.

Joe Syrnick, president and CEO of SRDC, said that the Kayak Tours gave participants a "unique river experience."

"Many people never realized, until they took the kayak tour, how much natural beauty this part of the river contains. It's been exciting for us to be able to showcase the river to people by kayak. They're usually surprised to see so many species of birds, fish and turtles, among the urban backdrop of the expressway and the Cira Centre. Because of the popularity of the kayak tours, we are hoping to expand them next season," Syrnick said.

There are still a few openings for both tours. For more information, or to book a tour, visit SRDC's website -- http://www.schuylkillbanks.org, or call 215-222-6030, ext. 100.

SRDC's mission is to achieve positive change on the river for the benefit of the city, region and commonwealth. All programs and events are in partnership with the Fairmount Park Commission and in support of the City of Philadelphia's "New River City" initiative. SRDC is also a participant in "Boundless Philadelphia," created by the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation.

Coverage is invited.
