The Arizona District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will host the SBA's National Ombudsman, Nicholas Owens, at a roundtable meeting of the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act (SBREFA) on June 13, 2007. Mr. Owens will hear comments from small businesses, non-profit organizations, and local government agencies that believe they have experienced unfair regulatory enforcement or compliance actions taken by federal agencies.

The National Ombudsman's primary mission is to assist small businesses when they experience excessive federal regulatory enforcement actions, such as repetitive audits or investigations, excessive fines, penalties, threats, retaliation or other unfair enforcement action by a federal agency. The Ombudsman receives comments from small business concerns and acts as a liaison between them and federal agencies. Comments received from small businesses, are forwarded to federal agencies for a high level review and federal agencies are requested to consider the fairness of their enforcement action. Comments referred to federal agencies have resulted in reduced or waived penalties and/or compliance actions.

"As the advocate for small business before Congress and federal regulatory agencies in Washington, DC, the SBA keeps informed of the impact of federal regulations on businesses," states Arizona SBA District Director Robert Blaney. "These roundtables are an important avenue for communication. Firms in the state should take advantage of this opportunity to be heard."

On June 13, the meeting will be held at SBA's Arizona District Office from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon at 2828 North Central Avenue, Suite 800, Phoenix. The SBA office at Thomas and Central has validated parking.

Each speaker will be allocated five to seven minutes. Space is limited to 60. Therefore, registration is necessary. Community leaders, the media and the public are invited to attend.

For more information contact SBA's Regional Advocate, Mike Hull, at 602-745-7327 or SBA's Deputy District Director, Bruce Hodgman, at 602-745-7200.
