From digital movies to Web page design, Pennsylvania high school students will showcase their cutting-edge technology skills at the Department of Education's 9th annual Pennsylvania High School Computer Fair on Tuesday, May 22, at Dickinson College in Carlisle.

Nearly 240 students from 97 Pennsylvania high schools will compete in categories such as animation, desktop publishing, digital movies and graphic design to compete for cash awards of $500, $250 or $100.

The goal of the competition is to showcase how computers can be used to unleash creativity, convey information and enhance learning. In order to compete at the state level, students had to place first at their regional fair hosted by their local intermediate unit. More than 1,400 students competed at the regional level.

Expanding the use of computer technology in schools is the focus of Governor Edward G. Rendell's "Classrooms for the Future" initiative. The $200 million effort aims to make every high school English, math, science and social studies classroom in Pennsylvania a "smart" classroom by providing laptop computers, high-speed internet access and state-of-the-art software to teachers and students. One hundred three schools from 79 school districts are participating in the first year of the three-year program.

Each student entry will be accompanied by a project summary, which includes project objectives, vision, overall purpose and a list of the software applications and additional equipment needed to complete the project. Judging will be done by professionals from business, industry, government and higher education.
