Local author and writer Joyce Faulkner will be signing copies of her book, In the Shadow of Suribachi on the 65th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day on December 7, 2006, from 7pm until 9pm at Joseph Beth Booksellers. Joseph Beth Booksellers is located at 2705 East Carson Street on the Southside of Pittsburgh near the Cheesecake Factory.

Her book recently received the 2006 Gold Medal for Historical Fiction from the Military Writers Society of America. Told as fiction, In the Shadow of Suribachi is a compilation of the stories the author heard from her father and interviews with veterans who fought at Iwo Jima. She takes the characters from pre-war days through the war to the present, capturing the horror of war and chronicling one of America's most important battles.

W. H. (Bill) McDonald, Jr. president and founder of the Military Writers Society of America, says of Suribachi, "She [Faulkner gives you such an honest and intimate portrayal of men who are in combat that one would think she was actually there. Her World War II novel about the battle of Iwo Jima is compelling, intense and realistic."

Faulkner, a resident of Pittsburgh, obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and an MBA at Cleveland State. Her education, along with her passion for aviation, history, travel and philosophy, allowed her to use her sharp observation and creative skills in the writing of In the Shadow of Suribachi.

Faulkner is also the author of Losing Patience, co-author of The Complete Writer and has several author shorts published.
