The following is being issued by United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities:

WHAT: Supreme Court Oral Arguments in Gonzales v. Carhart and Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood, both challenging the federal partial-birth abortion ban.

WHEN: Wednesday, November 8, 2006

WHO: Deirdre McQuade, chief spokesperson on abortion and abortion- related issues for the Catholic bishops of the United States, is available for interview and comment.

WHERE: Ms. McQuade will be in front of the Supreme Court from 9:30 am to 12 noon.

As Director of Planning and Information for the Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities, Deirdre McQuade is the U.S. bishops' chief spokesperson on the subject of abortion. The Catholic Church is perhaps our nation's leading pro- life voice and it played a key role in passage of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act. Through the Conference's Pro-Life Secretariat, the Church produces educational materials that reach millions of Americans promoting public policies recognizing the inherent dignity of all human beings, including the unborn.

Ms. McQuade also directs the USCCB's Second Look Project. With its current campaign, "Supreme Court Countdown: Partial-Birth Abortion," the Second Look Project has each weekday emailed a brief fact or piece of information on partial-birth abortion to news media and opinion leaders. The campaign began on October 2, when the Court opened its current session and ends on November 8, when oral arguments are heard.
