The 31st World Backgammon Championship has begun today at the Fairmont Monte Carlo with the first round of matches and will run until Sunday July 16th when the World Champion will get his share of a prize pool over to €240’000 during the Final match starting at 2 p.m. For the 31st edition of the Championship, 335 players are taking part in the main Event which includes the Championship (Expert), Intermediate and Beginner flights. Among the 211 experts who will battle it out in the Championship flight, former World Champions and Backgammon legends such as Paul Magriel, Mike Svobodny, Luigi Villa have all made it to Monte Carlo for the best, most prestigious Backgammon event of the year and the ultimate title of World Champion. The Fairmont Monte Carlo, ideally located in the heart of the Principality on the outstanding seafront the 4 star deluxe Hotel has hosted the event for over 30 years, giving it a unique charm and prestige. With a gala dinner at the Sporting Club on Wednesday night and a closing awards ceremony on Sunday at 9 p.m. at the Fairmont with many distinguished special guests attending. The Championship will also be televised.
