Jones Leaving the Detroit Housing Commission for Key Toronto Position

DETROIT, May 7, 2012 -- Eugene E. Jones, Jr., the executive director who turned around the Detroit Housing Commission (DHC), whose control is now being transitioned from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to becoming a stand alone agency, has accepted the position as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation. He will be assuming his new position on June 18.

DHC is the largest public housing commission in Michigan with a combined program of public and assisted housing serving more than 10,000 households. HUD took over DHC in 2005 citing mismanagement. Since 2008, when Jones arrived, DHC expanded its vision and provided a future for the housing market in Detroit, revitalizing four major sites under construction simultaneously. Jones also oversaw personnel management, the Housing Choice Voucher plan, redevelopment, and other programs. He was recognized by the Michigan Chronicle as part of their Men of Excellence award and a Legacy in Motion Newsmaker in 2011.

The Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) is home to 164,000 tenants, including 58,500 households – about six percent of Toronto's population. The organization employs 1,400, has $6 billion in assets and works on an annual budget of $600 million with an investment portfolio of over $150 million. There are currently 10 property development projects underway, representing $1 billion of new building.

A replacement for Jones will be named at a later date.
