In commemoration of October 15, the National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, Esperanza USA today launched a bold, national HIV/AIDS awareness and education campaign for Hispanic churches called Tu eres la respuesta (You Are the Answer).
"Esperanza USA is raising AIDS awareness in the Hispanic faith community with the Tu eres la respuesta campaign that educates and empowers our Hispanic churches on how to respond to HIV/AIDS in their communities," said Esperanza USA President Rev. Luis Cortes, Jr.
Tu eres la respuesta makes available faith and culturally appropriate resource materials for the Hispanic faith community about HIV/AIDS, a topic that the Hispanic church has ignored for many years because of sexual taboos and inaccurate social stigmas.
The campaign's objective is for Hispanic pastors and their congregations to join Esperanza USA in breaking down myths with HIV/AIDS as well as create communities of support that minister to those living with HIV/AIDS.
"As people of faith, it is our Christian duty to care for the sick in our community, including those suffering from HIV/AIDS. By taking collective action, the Hispanic church can become a proactive leader in prevention efforts through HIV/AIDS education," said Rev. Cortes.
Esperanza USA's Tu eres la respuesta campaign includes several relevant and unique resource materials for Hispanic churches:
* Pacto de Esperanza (Pledge of Hope): A personal and spiritual commitment
to educate oneself and a friend about HIV/AIDS.
* Hay una respuesta (There is a Way): A song, music video and compilation
CD with a message on responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with
compassion. Participating in the title song are internationally
renowned Hispanic artists Jose Luis Rodriguez (El Puma), Ricardo
Montaner, Marcos Witt, Yuri, Julissa, Maria del Sol and Rodrigo
Espinoza.
* No te rindas (Don't Give Up): A short film dramatizing how a Hispanic
couple's church reacts negatively to their HIV/AIDS status. Marcos
Witt, a two-time Latin Grammy Award winning artist, appears in the film.
* Todos estamos en la lucha (We Are All in the Fight): A study guide
accompanying the short film "No te rindas" for instructional and
religious reflection in church groups.
* There is a Way: How to Understand and Prevent HIV/AIDS: Written by Rev.
Luis Cortes and published by Simon & Schuster/Atria Books, this
educational book will be sold in English and in Spanish on the faith-
based response to HIV/AIDS.
Esperanza USA has already screened "No te rindas" for hundreds of Hispanic pastors in Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, New York and Tampa, Florida where the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Several dozen pastors have committed to showing "No te rindas" to their congregations and have signed the Pacto de Esperanza, demonstrating their alliance with Esperanza USA for raising HIV/AIDS awareness in the Hispanic church.
Esperanza USA is a network of Hispanic Christians, churches, and ministries committed to raising awareness and identifying resources that strengthen the Hispanic community.
