The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation

The board of trustees of The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation announced today that Philip D. Allsopp, president and chief executive officer for the past three years, will resign his position effective June 30, 2009.

The board named Anne Maley, president of Anne Maley Consulting, LLC, in Tucson, as chief operating officer responsible for the organization's operations and administration. The staff of the Foundation will report to her. Maley will assume the role of interim president and chief executive officer on July 1 following Allsopp's departure. The board will establish a search committee at a later date to initiate a national search for Allsopp's replacement.

Allsopp will remain at the Foundation for the next four months to assist with the transition to Maley and to help oversee Frank Lloyd Wright: From Within Outward, a major exhibition that is being co-organized with The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to be on view at the Guggenheim Museum in New York from May 15-August 23, 2009, as well as a benefit dinner that The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation will present at the museum on June 17, 2009.

In addition, Fred Stratton, chairman emeritus of Briggs & Stratton Corporation in Milwaukee, completed his one-year term as board chair and will remain on the board. The board elected Daniel Marquardt, Chicago-based managing principal at Thornton Tomasetti, a global engineering firm headquartered in New York, to a one-year term as board chair as part of a planned succession.

"The board recognized Phil for his leadership and contributions to further the Foundation's transformation and growth," Marquardt said. "As president and CEO, Phil has helped the organization make progressive changes in governance, establish strategic partnerships and collaborations, including the relationship with the Guggenheim, accelerate fundraising, increase involvement in the issues surrounding the built and natural environments and expand public outreach and exposure."

Allsopp described his tenure as a time of sweeping and positive changes for the Foundation.

"It has been an honor to have served the Foundation these past three years," said Allsopp, "and I am looking forward to working with Anne over the next four months of transition. I am confident that under Daniel's chairmanship and Anne's leadership the Foundation will continue to build on all that the board and I have implemented since 2006."

Said Marquardt, "We anticipate a seamless transition, with Anne focusing on the immediate priorities of operations and finances to further the Foundation's positive momentum. Anne brings a wealth of experience and expertise, having held leadership positions in a variety of non-profit organizations and running her consulting firm. She is known nationally as a leader in strategic planning, leadership and mission development, organizational development, collaborations and mergers, fund development, organizational effectiveness and personnel management. Anne also has been working as a management consultant for The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to conduct an audit to determine the feasibility of establishing even more and varied strategic partnerships, as this is a key initiative for the Foundation. The board was impressed with her capabilities, recognizing that she offers fresh insights based on her work for the Foundation and her professional experience with non-profit organizations."

Marquardt also extended his appreciation to Stratton for his tenure as chair.

"Fred leaves a legacy of strong, wise and visionary leadership," Marquardt praised, "and the board will continue to rely on his sound judgment and institutional knowledge."

Prior to opening her consulting firm in 2007, Maley was executive director of Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF), in Tucson for 10 years. Since 1992 she had been executive director of Shanti Foundation of Tucson, one of three AIDS service organizations which, under her guidance, merged to form SAAF. From 1989-1992 Maley was executive director of Massachusetts Shelter Providers Association in Boston, which followed her position as a principal responsible for human resources and organizational development services at Klein Associates, a management consulting firm in Cambridge, Mass. She was director of development and public relations for The Discovery Museum in Acton, Mass. She has a bachelor of science degree from Radford University in Virginia.

At Thornton Tomasetti, Marquardt has been principal in charge for the structural design of numerous cultural and institutional projects, including: the awarding-winning 2,251-seat Overture Center for the Arts, Madison, Wis.; the 1,500-seat Harris Theater for Music and Dance, an integral element of Chicago's Grant Park Millennium Park project; the Goodman Theatre, Chicago, Ill., which includes an 850-seat main theater and a 450-seat studio theater; the Minneapolis New Central Library in Minnesota; Northwestern Memorial Hospital's New Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago; and the recently opened North Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. A graduate of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Marquardt is a licensed structural engineer in Illinois and a licensed professional engineer in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio and Oklahoma.

"The Foundation is well positioned to fulfill its dual mission: to preserve and advance the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright and to encourage the creation of buildings and spaces that are more humane and sustainable as a means of solving the problems of the built and natural environments," Marquardt noted.
