Profile America -- Sunday, March 2nd. It's been known for many years that children learn better if they aren't hungry. That's the guiding principle behind National School Breakfast Week, which starts tomorrow. Many nutritional experts believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, coming as it does 12 hours or more since a person's last meal. This is especially true for children, whose energy level must be maintained to fully function in the classroom. Because of low family income, close to 10 million children across the U.S. take part in the Federal School Breakfast Program every month. The National School Lunch Program is much larger -- serving lunch to just over 30 million children monthly, either at no cost or at a reduced price.
