When his brother Ralph asked him to join him on a trip to promote a boat he had designed, Robert Brown had every reason to tell him "no." A self-employed painter and handyman, he was involved in a complicated floor tiling job at his in-laws' at the time, not to mention that he was completely broke and had several big family commitments quickly approaching.
Yet, just days later, Bob found himself staring at the Intruder 21, the single-engine, 21-foot flats boat that was about to take him on a whirlwind adventure that many called a "suicide mission" and etch his name into the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest non-stop ocean voyage in a flats boat.
Now, Bob recounts his amazing modern day adventure in his new book, "Bermuda Suicide Challenge in a Flats Boat" (published by AuthorHouse - ).
In the spring of 2007, Bob and Ralph set off from the coast of North Carolina for what Bob had originally thought was going to be a couple-hundred- mile trip from North Carolina to Bermuda, and from Bermuda back to New York City. In actuality, the first leg of the trip was about 700 miles, while the return leg was nearly 800. The entire trip was to be completed unescorted, earning it the label of a "suicide mission" by the press.
Through 9-foot seas, 35-mile-per-hour winds, blackout nights and GPS issues, the brothers battled their way to Bermuda and back to New York. Along the way, they learned many lessons about the sea, and they encountered both fans and doubters.
They were told many times "It can't be done" or "It's too dangerous," but Bob and Ralph stayed true to their mission. For their dedication they now have not only their Guinness Book record and World Record Academy confirmation for the "Longest Unescorted Oceanic Crossing in a Flats Boat," but also a story of perseverance, boldness and adventure that tops them all.
Featuring many drawings, color photos, blog entries, news articles and a trip timeline alongside Bob's detailed and engaging narrative, "Bermuda Suicide Challenge in a Flats Boat" is not to be missed.
"Bermuda Suicide Challenge in a Flats Boat" is Robert Brown's first published book. For more information, visit .
