Pennsylvania Beef Task Force Tours Lehigh County Plant

Pennsylvania Beef Task Force members are discovering new ways to market products through improved packaging and safety, said Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff today.
Members of the newly formed group toured Air Products in Trexlertown, Lehigh County, which is, itself, a task force member and manufacturer of atmospheric gas products used in food preservation.
"Pennsylvania is home to 28,000 beef producers who provide a safe, quality product to consumers," said Wolff. "By participating in educational tours offered by members, the Beef Task Force is working together to support the growth and development of the industry by finding progressive and proactive marketing tools that meet consumer demands of presentation and safety."
Air Products creates packaging to modify the atmosphere in which food is stored. By changing the carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen levels in packaging, shelf life, food safety and attractiveness may be extended.
Task force members joined representatives of Air Products to discuss methods of food preservation, on-farm water and wastewater treatment capabilities and alternative energy. Following the discussion, representatives toured the campus and food laboratory.
Under the direction of Governor Edward G. Rendell, the Beef Task Force was formed in August 2007 to explore ways to enhance profitability and promote Pennsylvania's beef industry through collaboration, legislation, communication and education. Comprised of 39 stakeholders, the task force represents the interests of 28,000 beef producers who contribute $1.9 billion to Pennsylvania's economy.
