The University of La Verne College of Law has announced that Associate Dean H. Randall Rubin has been named interim dean by University of La Verne Provost Alden Reimonenq following the recent death of the law school's dean, Donald J. Dunn. In addition, Dean Rubin has named Professor Juanda L. Daniel the law school's interim associate dean.

As interim deans, Rubin and Daniel will have essential roles in leading the law school in its pursuit for full American Bar Association approval. The entire law school faculty is engaged in preparation for the regularly-scheduled site visit in late February by the American Bar Association. The university administration continues to play an integral role in providing support to the College of Law during this period of transition.

"We are proceeding in the process of attaining full American Bar Association approval," said Provost Reimonenq. "A site team from the ABA is scheduled to visit the College of Law from February 25 to February 27 for a progress report, the next step in the process toward full approval. The University of La Verne is preparing to launch a national search for a permanent dean for the College of Law."

A member of the full-time faculty since 1990, Dean Rubin is intimately familiar with the law school's quest for national accreditation. From 1996 to 2002, he was responsible for the law school's academic programs as associate dean. From 2002 to 2003, he served as interim dean during the university search that resulted in the recruitment of Dean Dunn. And since 2003, he served as associate dean under Dean Dunn.

In August 2007, Dean Dunn left the law school on medical leave and Dean Rubin began serving as acting dean. At that time, Dean Rubin appointed Professor Juanda L. Daniel acting associate dean "due to her strong administrative skills, her ability to work with staff, faculty and students, and because she is respected by all constituencies at the College of Law," he said.

As interim associate dean, Professor Daniel will be responsible for overseeing the law school's academic program, including faculty orientation and development; interviewing and hiring part-time faculty; writing the teaching schedule; working with full-time faculty on their professional growth plans; and overseeing the peer evaluation process. In addition, she will address student concerns regarding the academic program, should they arise.

"During the fall semester, Dean Daniel was a tremendous source of support, and I have every confidence that she will excel in this position," said Dean Rubin.

A University memorial service will be held at the College of Law for Dean Donald Dunn, the date and time still to be confirmed. Once arrangements are in place, the information will be made available on the ULV College of Law Web site at http://law.ulv.edu.

Prior to joining the academic community, Dean Rubin practiced for more than 12 years in business transactions, estate planning and probate, appellate advocacy, criminal defense, general civil litigation, corporate law and family law after graduating eighth in his class at Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles. Moreover, he served as an arbitration panelist for Los Angeles Superior Court (East District) civil matters for nine years and holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of La Verne.

An expert in contracts and real estate matters, Professor Daniel joined the College of Law faculty in 2001 after working with the City of Riverside. She represented the city in a variety of municipal law matters in both court and administrative proceedings and served as the primary legal advisor for the City's Planning Commission and planning department staff. Her practice experience also includes four years as an associate at Riverside-based Reid & Hellyer P.C., where she focused on real estate matters, business disputes and construction litigation.

Located in Ontario, the University of La Verne College of Law is the only ABA-approved law school in Inland Southern California, a geographic area of more than four million people. For more information about the College of Law, please call (909) 460-2001 or visit the Web at http://law.ulv.edu.

The University of La Verne College of Law was provisionally approved by the American Bar Association on February 13, 2006.
