USIBC Hails Commissioning of INS Jalashwa as Major Milestone in Bilateral Relationship

With the commissioning of INS Jalashwa on Friday, formerly the U.S.S. Trenton, India joined a select group of countries operating a 'landing platform dock' in high seas. Ambassador to the U.S. H.E. Ronen Sen did the honors, thereby providing the country's navy the enhanced capability to transport troops, personnel and equipment to greater distances.
The Jalashwa was acquired from the U.S. when the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the acquisition on July 31, 2006. It is the first ship of its class to be inducted into the Indian Naval Fleet, and will mark a quantum jump in the Navy's integral sealift and airlift capabilities as it assumes greater responsibility in the region and the world.
At the ceremony, a proud Ambassador Sen exclaimed, "the commissioning is manifestation and harbinger of our growing partnership with the United States. It truly represents a congruence of our strategic and long-term security interests. This is a historic day for both countries."
"The U.S.-India Business Council is proud to have supported the Trenton transfer and will continue to advocate for greater trust between the two militaries. The Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004 and last year's Kashmir Earthquake underscore the importance of interoperable militaries when it comes to international disasters and relief efforts," Ron Somers, President of USIBC, said.
USIBC celebrates its 32nd Anniversary on June 27th this year in Washington, DC at its "Global India" Summit, which will feature Boeing's CEO Jim McNerney, Reliance's CEO Mukesh Ambani, India's Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath, U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez, and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice among others.
The U.S.-India Business Council is comprised of 250 of the largest U.S. companies investing in India, joined by two dozen global Indian companies, whose common aim is to strengthen commercial relations and deepen two-way trade. The USIBC has offices in Washington, New York, San Francisco, and New Delhi. USIBC celebrates its 32nd Anniversary during this auspicious 60th year of India's independence.
