In the wake of the recent pet food scare, many pet owners whose animals were exposed to tainted food stand vigil as they nurse their animals back to good health. Along with proper veterinary care, medication and diet, recovery for sickened pets can be aided by music developed by the Laurel Canyon Animal Company.

Used by animal rescue groups and shelters throughout the country, musical selections featured in the CD "Songs to Make Dogs Happy" have a calming effect on animals. By lessening a pet's agitation and discomfort from the effects of tainted food, the animal is more likely to recover. See

"We're the only record label in the world dedicated exclusively to creating music about, for and with animals," said Skip Haynes, a songwriter who along with Dana Walden founded the Laurel Canyon Animal Company. The pair utilized the talents and expertise of intuitive animal communicator Dr. Kim Ogden to develop their newest release.

There's science behind the music. Over 200 dogs were selected nationwide to participate in canine focus groups facilitated by Dr. Ogden to determine their preferences in music and content. The dogs' responses were used as guides for the creation of music and lyrics. The CD was tested for over a year by individuals and rescue groups, and found to have rehabilitative as well as entertainment qualities for dogs.

Veterinarian Richard L. Porter of KV Vet Supply witnessed the therapeutic value of the CD while treating a 13-month old Labrador Retriever suffering from severe seizures. Toxins passed along to the pup at birth from his poisoned mother created a life-threatening condition. Prognosis for the Lab was doubtful considering a littermate had been euthanized for the same condition. Introducing the surviving puppy to the CD, the music had an immediate calming effect and contributed to the pup's successful recovery.

In addition to entertainment, calming and recuperative qualities, the CD has also been found to ease separation anxiety and decrease stress associated with traveling.

The Laurel Canyon Animal Company actively supports organizations and individuals that help animals. "Songs to Make Dogs Happy" and other animal-based releases are available online at or by calling (323) 822-1764.
