Carmanah to supply solar-powered bus stop lighting to Orange County

Carmanah Technologies Corporation is pleased to announce it has been awarded a follow-on contract valued at $548,000 to supply units of its proprietary, award-winning i-STOP(R) solar LED-illuminated bus stops to California's Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA). This is Carmanah's second large order with OCTA, which is the third-largest bus agency in the United States.

"This follow-on order comes as a result of the outstanding success of our initial rollout of i-STOP(R) systems with OCTA over the past two years," states Carmanah's CEO, Art Aylesworth. "This contract provides further evidence of the growing mainstream acceptance of our solar LED integrated lighting technologies."

OCTA, which is one of the largest and fastest-growing transit authorities in the U.S., began a field trial of Carmanah's i-STOP(R) illuminated bus stops in May 2003 to evaluate the effectiveness of solar-powered area lighting and schedule illumination on its 24-hour "Nite Owl" service. Following this trial, more than 80% of bus operators were in favor of expanding the program and it received several commendations from the public and city officials. OCTA proceeded to roll out 710 i-STOP(R) systems over a two-year period beginning in April 2005. While these units were installed along "Nite Owl" routes, the latest order will provide bus stop lighting at other locations throughout the county.

Carmanah's i-STOP(R) solar LED bus stops have won significant public support by providing a safer environment for waiting passengers and making riders more visible to bus drivers. The self-contained design, easy installation, and maintenance-free operation of the i-STOP(R) bus stops also resulted in significant cost savings to OCTA over traditional hard-wired lighting systems.
