The American Jewish Committee welcomed the UN Security Council's unanimous adoption today of the latest in a series of resolutions against Iran's relentless quest for nuclear technology. Resolution 1747 will impose sanctions against Iran's nuclear and arms export programs, financial and other state-sponsored institutions and groups involved with the country's Revolutionary Guards.
"The voice of the international community is unambiguous and unwavering," said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris. "Iran's headlong pursuit of nuclear technology with clear military applications, in breach of its treaty obligations, poses a threat to global and regional security and cannot be tolerated."
AJC praised Ambassador Alejandro Wolff, the acting U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN, for remarks after today's vote in which he noted the recent acceleration of Iran's uranium-enrichment program, in blatant violation of the Security Council, and pointed out the dangers of Iran's support for international terrorism, its threats to "wipe Israel off the map" and the statements by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denying the Holocaust.
AJC also commends all 15 Security Council member states for their continued solidarity in the face of the Iranian threat to peace and security -- in the Middle East and beyond. The dangers posed by long-range Iranian missiles and Iran's support for Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations would be profoundly elevated were Iran to acquire the nuclear weapons know-how it seeks.
In addition to the five permanent members -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China -- the current Security Council includes Belgium, Congo, Ghana, Indonesia, Italy, Panama, Peru, Qatar, Slovakia and South Africa.
