According to the NLN 2006 Faculty Census Survey, fewer than half the full-time faculty in baccalaureate and higher degree nursing programs hold doctoral degrees. In associate degree programs, doctorally prepared faculty account for only 6.6 percent of the nursing faculty and the number is less than one percent in diploma programs. Additionally, fewer than 20 percent of the doctoral nursing programs offer students the opportunity to focus on research in nursing education.

To help address these issues, the NLN Foundation is pleased to announce the NLN Foundation Dissertation Scholarship for Nursing Education Scholars. Four $2,500 scholarships to offset dissertation expenses will be awarded; applicants must be NLN members to be eligible. This scholarship assistance is being offered to doctoral candidates whose dissertations focus on nursing education research. Said NLN Foundation chair Kathryn Mershon, "We believe that supporting graduate students during this critical period of their education will increase the quality of research being done and improve the chances for success and sustainability in their faculty roles."

The NLN Foundation for Nursing Education supports the mission of the National League for Nursing through the funding of endowments and the development of initiatives that benefit the NLN's membership, increase member accessibility to educational programs, and fund new and innovative research in nursing education.

For more information about the NLN Foundation or to download a copy of the application, please visit www.nlnfoundation.org or contact Nicole DeMent, development associate, at 212-812-0348.

The NLN Foundation for Nursing Education is working to address the nation's nursing faculty shortage and to transform nursing education to meet the needs of today's nursing practice environment.
